The USAID-supported Uganda/IDEA project is working to increase the production and export of a variety of low- and high-value agricultural commodities. Headquartered at the
Agribusiness Development Centre (ADC)
in Kampala, the project promotes linkages between smallholders, producers, and exporters throughout the country. To date, the ADC has helped generate exports worth over $20 million and raised the incomes of more than 25,000 small-scale farmers and agricultural workers.
High-Value Horticulture
The ADC's High-Value Program provides technical assistance to small- and medium-sized producers on the production and postharvest handling of a range of high-value crops such as courgettes, hot peppers, okra, runner beans, vanilla, and fresh cutflowers. The program also assists local producers and exporters in developing market linkages with importers in major import markets such as Holland and the United Kingdom.
Cereals, Grains and Pulses
The ADC's work in field crops include helping farmers improve the quality and yield of maize, beans, organic sesame, rice, sorghum, and other cereals and grains. Emphasis is placed on building commercial linkages between Ugandan producers and buyers in regional markets such as Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi. The ADC also assists farmer groups in marketing their cereals and grains to the
World Food Programme
